A Big Night for Wallkill: Homecoming Parade and Game
Alison Gerow, Staff Writer
On Friday, October 6th, the varsity football team lost to Goshen at the homecoming game. Despite the loss, however, Wallkill Pride was very apparent.
The festivities began with a homecoming parade. The marchers were welcomed with overwhelming cheers as the community gathered to show their support. The parade began and excitement coursed through the crowd. Led by the Ostrander Elementary School, the parade kicked off at about 6:15. The students and student-athletes in the parade were ecstatic to be there, and you could tell by the look on their faces as they entered the field. The football players were the final group of the parade; as they walked out, the crowd roared with excitement. As an observer you could tell that they were really serious about the game and you couldn't blame them; it was one of the biggest games of the year. Soon after the parade, the game commenced with Allyson Powers (violin) and Joslyn Shepard (vocals) performing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. Once the game officially started the team reentered-they ran out onto the field, bursting through the banner and carrying the American flag.
The game kicked off at 7:00 pm on the dot. Despite the loss, there were some definite highlights in the matchup. The game included a fantastic opening reception by Andrew Strobach. The team played a tough game over the course of the night with some powerful throws by quarterbacks Anthony Quattrochi and Tom Norton. Anthony Quattrochi had a 17-yard run in the 2nd quarter that helped us advance on Goshen. There was also a terrific 33-yard run by running back Jacob Miller. Jeison Cobb had a 24-yard catch after a wonderful throw in the 2nd quarter. The defensive line played a fantastic game and made some overall nice stops against the Goshen offense.
The cheerleaders had a great performance at half time and supported the team the whole time. There was a ton of Wallkill pride at the game, from the cheers to the sounds of Mr. Shea giving observers a play-by-play narrative.
One great thing about being part of a school like Wallkill is the sportsmanship that can be seen on the field. Although Goshen is a rival of our school, it is safe to say that there is a level of respect between every player on that field, even though we try to win every time. Even with a loss, there was a lot to be proud of.
