Club Spotlight: SHAC/SADD
Shianne Henion, Staff Writer
Here at Wallkill, there are well-known clubs and then there are those that aren't as publicized. In Club Spotlight, clubs will receive some well-deserved recognition, and hopefully some of you will find a club or two you are interested in joining! To kick off this segment, here's some information about our health club, SHAC/SADD.
SHAC/SADD-Student Health Advisory Committee/Students Against Destructive Decisions-is the health club here at Wallkill, and focuses on many aspects of wellness throughout the school year. When a person joins SADD (a shorter way of saying it), they can expect to improve their skills in fundraising, correct planning, communication, and knowledge of different health problems. Although this club does focus on health issues, a student doesn't have to want to make health a part of their career; a reason to join SADD could be because it's a club that still interests the student. One of the first objectives that SADD focuses on would be the first blood drive of the year. There is a quarterly blood drive at the high school, and SADD helps with all four. After the blood drive has passed, then SADD moves its focus. Various fundraisers and club activities are planned for the year; sketches for the SADD monthly bulletin are prepared and put into action.
The leaders of SADD include Mrs. Winters and the four officers. Mrs. Winters is the school nurse, and she helps put focus and great energy into SADD. As the supervisor, she is who officers and other club members go to for advice on current SADD projects, or focuses on certain parts of SADD that needs to be improved. The officers of SADD for 2017-2018 are Shianne Henion (President), Arianna Dupiton (Vice President), Megan Raymo (Secretary) and Elizabeth Schifani (Treasurer). As officers, they are expected to work together and make every meeting of SADD successful and enjoyable. Currently, SADD is involved in attending a field trip for a driving Safety conference and planning an amazing week for the GASO (Great American Smoke Out) day, which is November 16th.
Meetings are held every Wednesday in the nurses' office unless otherwise noted. If there are any questions, please contact Mrs. Winters in the nurses' office or any of the four SADD officers.
