Respect and Unity in Our Community

On March 14, 2018, Wallkill Senior High School held a respect and unity assembly in between 8th and 9th period. This assembly was held to not only recognize recent tragedies such as the 17 people who died in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school shooting, but also to inform every one of the value and importance of our first responders and to explain how we can help the situation. Throughout the entire day, before each period, there was a message of positivity read and how to spread and increase unity in our school.
To honor the 17 who died, there was a presentation visible throughout the entire assembly that had
pictures and information about all those who died, including what they did for a living and their plans for the future. Many presenters spoke, and first responders were present. A unity banner was created and signed by the students during their lunch periods. Junior Kaitlyn Silvernail wrote and gave a speech about depression and how it affects everyone's lives and afterwards, Women's Choir performed their song "Hold On", to honor those who died. School Resource Officer Eric McCartney spoke about the first responders and thanked them. He informed us of the statistics about school shootings and our first responders to make us more aware. He encouraged everyone that if they had an idea about how to improve the situation to come forward at any time and inform them, because good ideas don't just come from one source. Evelyn Marie Rose played "Amazing Grace" on her bagpipes with a moment of silence afterwards to honor those who died. To finish off the assembly, Ashlan Hubbard spoke about encouraging unity, respect, and positivity. She said that we are the solution for our divided society.
