Spring Music Department Happenings

Wallkill’s Music Department is filled with talented young individuals who have been working incredibly hard to expand their musical education. This March marked Music in Our Schools Month. MIOSM was created by the National Association for Music education (NAfME). March 2019 marks the 34th Music in Our Schools Month. It is a month dedicated to the celebration and expansion of music in schools around the nation. Music is an important tool in education and New York was the first state to recognize this, celebrating Music in Our Schools Day on March 14, 1973. Every year, Wallkill Senior High School holds concert in March to celebrate Music in Our School's Month where everyone who has received music honors receives awards. The following groups students were selected for music honors this year:

In addition to these honors, the Music Department continued to succeed this year on their annual trip to Festivals of Music to compete with other schools in multiple divisions. This year, the trip took place in Boston and they spent three days there competing and exploring the city. They competed Saturday, April 27th and attended the awards ceremony the following day. The string orchestra received a ‘Good’ rating on their sight-reading and took home second place overall with an ‘Excellent’ rating. The symphonic band received a ‘Superior’ rating in sight-reading and won first place in their division with aSpring M ‘Superior’ rating. The jazz ensemble won first place in their division with an ‘Excellent’ rating and won best overall jazz ensemble. The mixed choir received an ‘Excellent’ rating on their sight-reading and brought home second place with a ‘Superior’ rating. The women’s choir placed first in their division with a ‘Superior’ rating. The madrigal choir brought home first place in their division with an ‘Excellent’ rating and won best overall specialty choir. Isabella Cartagena won overall best soloist. Congratulations to the Music Department.
