Ever been disappointed in the ending of your favorite show? If so, keep reading...

2020 has been a rough year, and even though it is ending soon, show lovers will never forget what 2020 has brought for many shows that a lot of people have watched since the very beginning. If you love Grey’s Anatomy, Supernatural, or Criminal Minds you know exactly what I am talking about. Grey’s Anatomy is streaming season 17 which is known to be their last, Supernatural ended the show November 19th, 2020, and Criminal Minds ended February 9th, 2020. I am an active lover of all these shows, so seeing them end was sad but also frustrating. I know that many people who have come up to me and said “Wow the ending of …. stunk” or said something like “They could have ended …. so much better”. This is a common thing to hear after a long show has ended. I mention Grey’s Anatomy, Supernatural, and Criminal Minds because they all have 15 or more seasons. While watching the ends of these shows it got me wondering, “It is so hard for writers to end something this long”. No one is ever going to be satisfied with the ending of their favorite show and there is always something you would change and something you feel you could have done differently or better. For example, I feel that the ending for Supernatural was too easy and predictable. There are many fans complaining about the ending, in an article by Screen Rant fans said the ending was not great because of the, “Lackluster Plot, poor representation, and words left unsaid”. For a writer to sit down and end a show that they have been devoted to for 15 years or more, is harder than fans understand. As an active watcher and lover of all these shows mentioned, I will admit I felt some things could have been changed, but we need to stop looking at all the negatives and focus on the fact that the writers tried their best and that nothing can be perfect. The writer of Supernatural states, "The Supernatural ending is 'the right one': Fans 'would've hated my ending!”. I think that this short quote indicates that even writers of long shows that they have written every episode for, need to change how they want to end it based off the fans. The next time a show ends, think about how many times the writer changed his idea of the perfect ending to shape what he thinks you wanted, think about how important what you think about the ending is to the writer, and how all the hate and controversy will make them feel.

Writers create shows and movies to entertain us, and all we do is complain that it isn't good enough for us. We must take time to appreciate the amount of stress writers must go through and how much hate mail and angry emails they get. Movies are even harder to write endings for, sense the writers haven’t developed their feelings for characters and plot they must pull something together that they think will would best fit and not necessarily base off the ending off fans. Ending movies is different from long shows because the writers of longer shows get to know their fans for years and years while writers for movies don’t know if people will even like the movie, and don’t know what their fans would want. Overall, I think we should appreciate writers and start looking about positives of endings, in 2020 with this pandemic not looking like its slowing down, we need to walk away from always thinking about negatives and judging everything, re-watch the endings of some of your favorite shows and focus on some positives you have.
